Head of Fine Print
Mike Birtchnell has taught both part time and fulltime within Fine Art education for many years. He studied Fine Art painting at St.Martins School of Art and postgraduate printmaking at Chelsea College of Art (both now within the London Institute.) He was lecturer in Printmaking at Chelsea College of Art postgraduate studies for eleven years and then Head of Printmaking at Maidstone College of Art (KIAD) and Head of Fine Art.
He was a visiting lecturer at numerous colleges in the UK including Sunderland, Newcastle, Kingston, Byam Shaw, Harrow, Birmingham, Cheltenham and a visiting artist at Kansas City Art Institute and Brown University in the US. He has acted for the CNAA as course advisor for printmaking and in 1991 was appointed Head of Painting and Printmaking and Coordinator for postgraduate studies at Northern Territories University, Darwin, Australia. In 1992 he was appointed Head of Printmaking at the University of Western Sydney. He also acted as Postgraduate Examiner at Sydney College of the Arts, Course Advisor for Edith Cowan University Perth, Western Australia and guest lecturer at the University of Western Australia.
He founded the Access Printmedia studios (an academic and community access studio for printmaking) at UWS and the Australian Printmedia Awards-the Australian National Print competition. Mike Birtchnell is also a founder member of Gandhi-an international group of artist/educators.
