Industrial Design

BDes in Industrial Design

This course equips graduates to design products for almost every industry sector. They may be involved in the design of every product imaginable.

The study of humans and their relationship with products is essential to the course. So defining users needs – aesthetics, function, ease-of-use and safety is our primary concern. Lectures on materials, manufacturing technologies and on the history of design are also vitally important components.

Course Description

The course is predominantly project-based, with projects becoming more complex as the course progresses. Some may be highly imaginative and futuristic, others will involve working with real companies, where the requirement may be more concerned with existing possibilities.

In Year 1 you will be integrated for much of the time with other NCAD students and a rigorous foundation in visual and three-dimensional investigation will be provided. Basic design methods and technologies will also be introduced.

In Year 2, there is a focus on design projects, supported by computer aided design, presentation and human factors (ergonomics).

In Year 3, during the first two terms, students will continue design studies and more intensive projects. Elective projects allow individual students to develop specific interests. All students may participate in a period of work experience in Ireland or study abroad at one of numerous colleges throughout Europe with which we have exchange agreements.

In Year 4 two major design projects are undertaken, one of which is self-directed, resulting in a comprehensive presentation for final examination.

20% of the entire course is devoted to studies in the Visual Culture and, in the final year, the presentation of a thesis.

Career Prospects

A survey of graduates conducted in 2003 showed that graduates work as industrial designers in many areas of industry and consultancy and also as furniture, interior, exhibition or multimedia designers. Others work in design management or design education. Some have opted for further study in Ireland or abroad and have attended prestigious institutions including the world-famous Royal College of Art, London, and the University of Art and Design, Helsinki.
