Industrial Design
(CAO Course Code: AD012)

Entry to Year 1

Entry Requirements

Educational Standard

The minimum academic entry requirement in the Leaving Certificate examination or approved equivalent is 2 subjects at Grades A1–C3 on Higher Level papers and 4 other subjects at Grades A1–D3 on Ordinary or Higher Level papers, in NUI recognised subjects.

These subjects must include:

  1. Irish.*
  2. English.
  3. A third language or Art.
  4. Grade B3 or Higher in Ordinary Level Mathematics (Grade D3 Higher Level Maths is acceptable)

    OR

  5. One of the following subjects at Grade D3 on a Higher Level paper or C3 or higher on an Ordinary Level paper: Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physics with Chemistry, Engineering, Construction Studies, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Biology or applicants may be accepted on the basis of exceptional talent or industrial experience supported by a portfolio of personal work.
 

Leaving Certificate results may be combined. The College does not operate a Leaving Certificate points scheme.

*Exemption from the subject Irish may be granted in accordance with NUI regulations.

Students may meet the entry requirements by presenting NCVA Level 2 as set out on the First Year Core page , but must also satisfy the Leaving Certificate subject requirements at 4. & 5. above.

Application Procedure

Method of Application

Industrial Design applicants must apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO).

Applicants should consult the current CAO Handbook.

This is a restricted course and late applications cannot be considered.

Portfolio and Interview

The presentation of a portfolio of selected work at interview is obligatory. The portfolio should demonstrate the candidate's creative ability and may include the following: drawings; paintings; photography; real objects (or photographs, if more convenient), concerned with arts, crafts, practical hobbies or experimental ideas. All applicants to this course are offered an interview. Only applicants who attend for interview will be considered. Applicants attend an interview in late April / early May and should not submit a portfolio in advance. The selection procedure is based on interview and portfolio assessment.

Notification of Result of Application

Interview results are issued in June. Place offers will be made through the CAO.

Transfer Applicants

Applicants to Years 2 and 3 must apply directly to NCAD. Eligible applicants will be interviewed in June if places are available.
