Abbey Theatre

In conjunction with the Abbey Theatre, the courses will take the theatre’s annual Summer ‘classic’ Irish play, George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Major Barbara’, as inspiration, including a trip to see the production and behind the scenes access to the theatre and archive.

Major Barbara probes the undercurrents of a firebrand Salvation Army major’s relationship with her arms-manufacturing, millionaire father. On a mission to save, Major Barbara must navigate the uneasy terrain where good and evil, morality and economics, salvation and perdition meet.

A brilliantly ironic comedy, this is one of Shaw’s most controversial, witty and entertaining plays.

The Abbey Theatre is proud to welcome back Annabelle Comyn following the success of her vivacious production of G.B. Shaw’s Pygmalion in 2011. Major Barbara, to be produced for the first time ever on the Abbey stage this year, marks their long term commitment to staging Shaw’s plays annually.
