Outgoing Exchange Applicants

NCAD offers a 4-year pathway to a BA International allowing students to pursue accredited study or work activity abroad with an NCAD partner institution/organization. This can be undertaken in combination with modules offered through Studio+/Visual Culture+ or as a full academic year (two-semester) international experience.

Study Abroad – Application and Nomination

Under Erasmus+, NCAD has an extensive network of bi-lateral partners in over 50 cities across Europe. The college is also linked with a smaller number of international partners chiefly located in North America.

Students interested in applying for study exchange during the Studio+ year (Year 3 of the 4 year pathway) are invited to submit an application to the Erasmus Office by the end of February of Year 2. The form should indicate your intended exchange period – (autumn/spring/full academic year) – as well as your preferred destinations. You are encouraged to consult with your Head of Department with regards to suitable universities / programmes from NCAD’s Partner Network.

Once approved by Department as a candidate for study abroad, you are eligible for nomination to an NCAD partner institution.

Nominated students apply directly to the NCAD partner institution. Application requirements will vary between institutions but typically include a CV, statement of interest, application form, portfolio (Studio) or writing sample (Visual Culture). Please consult individual partner websites for confirmation of application procedures and closing dates.

In order to apply for study exchange at a partner institution, you must firstly be nominated via the NCAD Erasmus Office. It is not possible to be nominated to multiple partners simultaneously.

Study-Abroad Fees and Grants

Bi-lateral Agreements with partner institutions are based on a fee-waiver. Students undertaking an exchange maintain their status as NCAD-registered students with normal fees applying. Tuition fees are not payable to the host institution.

NCAD is allocated a limited number of Erasmus+ grants each year to support students on study mobility or Traineeship in Europe. The grant is a contribution towards the costs associated with studying abroad. It is not sufficient to finance all overseas living expenses. Students travelling to non-EU/EEA partners are not eligible for an Erasmus grant.

Assessment

NCAD students on exchange will be assessed by the host institution. A Learning Agreement is put in place to ensure that participants have opportunity to make up 30 ECTS credits (or equivalent) in a study semester. While your study abroad should be broadly compatible with your study programme at NCAD, there may also be opportunity to take complementary modules in related disciplines.

Many European institutions will offer programme delivered in English. Some partners however will require visiting students to demonstrate knowledge of the local language.
