Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Designing learning that is accessible, inclusive, equitable, and challenging for every learner.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a research-based framework to guide the design of learning environments that are accessible, inclusive, equitable, and challenging for every learner. Ultimately, the goal of UDL is to support learner agency, the capacity to actively participate in making choices in service of learning goals.’
‘UDL aims to change the design of the environment rather than to situate the problem as a perceived deficit within the learner’ (CAST UDL Guidelines.)
UDL Working Group at NCAD
The UDL working group is a community of practice that exists to support our collective learning and share helpful strategies and techniques within the group and with the College more broadly.
Staff members who had participated in the AHEAD UDL badge met regularly during 2023 to share experiences related to UDL within NCAD. The group identified a list of topics deserving of further exploration. Some of these led to T&L projects that have since been funded by SATLE seed-grants.
Information about UDL-related events are posted on workvivo, but NCAD staff members are welcome to reach out to the T&L Office to explore opportunities to join this community of practice. The group is open to all NCAD staff members; completing the AHEAD UDL badge is not a requirement for participation.
CAST UDL Guidelines 3.0
The CAST UDL Graphic organiser is a useful instrument to support the design of learning and teaching with students’ learning agency in mind. These guidelines were updated on July 2024 to account for new research and learning from practitioners around the world.
The AHEAD UDL Badge
Several academic staff members have completed the AHEAD UDL badge and some support staff members have participated in a pilot version of the course being rolled out to non-teaching staff.
The AHEAD badge offers an introduction to UDL principles and helpful resources. Learning groups offer participants an opportunity to share practice and learn from each other. This includes structured opportunities to provide and receive peer feedback on the learning task. Open calls for NCAD staff members to complete the AHEAD UDL Badge are posted on NCAD's intranet, Workvivo.
