MA Service Design - AD431

NCAD is currently in the process of restructuring its postgraduate offering to allow for greater choice and flexibility in the delivery of these programmes. As part of this phased restructuring, the MA in Service Design will be offered as a part-time option starting from September 2023, enabling students to combine the course with other professional and personal responsibilities.

Programme Information

Service designers create solutions for complex systemic and societal challenges, developing experiences that address the needs of a diverse range of stakeholders. The MA Service Design teaches the application of design methods, tools and thinking to sectors such as healthcare, technology, finance, transportation and education. The MA in Service Design welcomes candidates from a range of fields including design, business, sociology, systems thinking, education, banking, technology and the public sector, to shape the services of the future through design thinking and doing.

Minmum Academic Qualifcation 

All applicants are expected to present an approved Bachelor degree at minimum level of 2nd class honours (2.2)

Applicants who do not meet the minimum academic entry requirements may be considered on the basis of prior work or learning experience (RPEL). Candidates may be required to pass a qualifying examination set by the relevant department before being accepted to a Masters degree programme. Attendance at selected undergraduate lecture courses at NCAD, together with related written work may be prescribed. 

You may apply for the programme if you are currently completing your Undergraduate Degree. NCAD will review the rest of your application If necessary, we can make you a Conditional Offer. When your degree is completed and you send us final transcripts we will upgrade this to a Full Offer

Checklist of Supporting Documents 

  • A Statement of Interest - 500 words framing your reasons for applying to the programme. Please indicate a subject/discipline area that you believe can best advance your practice.   

  • A recent CV

  • Certified transcripts of previous programmes followed

  • Certified copies of degree/ certificates and/or other appropriate third level qualifications bearing the official stamp of the institution.

  • Reference 1 (Academic - Head of School/Department preferred)*

  • Reference 2 (Tutor or Current/Recent Employer)

    • Some referees prefer to submit the reference directly to the college. If this is the case, please instruct your referee to email a standard reference to postgraduate@ncad.ie

    • Please make sure all references contain the letterhead and the institution contact email address for the referee.

  • Portfolio/Evidence of previous work

    • Applications for studio based programmes must be supported by visual documentation or other documentation that best represents your practice. Applicants are requested to upload a document via the online application with access to your portfolio. This document can include a link to an on-line portfolio or a link to a folder on Google Drive.

    • We do require evidence of previous work undertaken, even if your background is not Design related. This will depend on the experience and background of the candidate making the application. Feel free to submit any material you feel showcases an aspect of your skill-set that is relevant to the programme you are applying for.

    • We are open to reviewing written work or documentation of a project that might be more theoretical or technical in nature. Some candidates chose to describe projects they have been involved with in a "case study" format, eg. for MA Service Design if they have been involved in improving an aspect of customer service in a business, they describe the process they engaged with to do so. 

    • There is no set requirement on the number of pages or projects - this is up to each individual applicant.

English Language Requirements

All programmes in NCAD are taught through English. International Applicants are asked to provide proof of their English Language Proficiency.

Notes on Making Your Application

The priority deadline for receipt of applications to postgraduate programmes starting in Sept. 2022 is Thursday 31st March 2023. Applications made by 31st March are guaranteed to be reviewed by NCAD. If you apply after this date, we may not be in a position to review your application.
