NCAD has 7 projects, involving 10 students, shortlisted for RSA Student Design Awards.

Wednesday 5 May 2021 Ireland’s National College of Art and Design (NCAD) is the most-shortlisted institution at the global RSA Student Design Awards 2020-21, with a total of seven projects – involving 10 students and two departments – shortlisted across four categories.

The Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) Student Design Awards is one of the oldest and most-respected international student design competitions, challenging students to apply their skills and creativity to tackle current social and environmental issues. Competitors are challenged to think about the role their design thinking can have in society and asked to think of themselves as the instigators of change.

Three NCAD student projects are shortlisted in the Product Design category, two in Moving Image Design and one each in Interaction Design and MA Service Design.

Sam Russell, Head of NCAD’s Department of Product Design said: “We are delighted to see this high level of achievement at an international level for our students of design. It's a recognition of their capacity to produce work at the highest level and to use a human-centred design process to propose solutions for some of today's most pressing social and environmental issues. Our students have excelled despite the challenging circumstances this year and we look forward to seeing the impact they can have as they graduate and start their careers in design.”

John Paul Dowling, Head of NCAD’s Department of Communication Design said: “We are delighted that our students’ work has been recognised by such a prestigious organisation as the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). Over the past five years the Communication Design Department has implemented a focused approach to the teaching and learning of Moving Image Design, which resulted in a dedicated BA programme for the subject launched in 2017. This international validation acknowledges the work of staff and students in the subject area across all disciplines in the department.”
