Tuesday, 11th June 2019
Two students at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD)’s School of Design have received an award in the annual RSA Student Design Awards, which recognise projects by students and recent graduates who use design to solve social challenges.
The Product Design students, Maire Kane and Hannah Grogan, received the award for their project ‘Personal Patient Pack PPP’, a product pack that facilitates medical devices to stay with the patient and be reused throughout their journey whilst reducing waste by 67 per cent.
The prize was won by the students under the awards’ ‘Circular Emergency’ category, which celebrates products, services or systems that uses circular design principles to make emergency medical care more effective. The Circular Emergency award comes with a prize of £2,500 and is sponsored by Philips, with support from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
In addition to the RSA Student Design Awards, the two students also won an award for their project in the D&AD New Blood Awards, which recognises outstanding creative talent with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Director of NCAD, Prof Sarah Glennie said: “We are delighted with the two fantastic accolades our students have received in these prestigious international awards and congratulate them wholeheartedly for their great success. An important objective of our teaching at NCAD is to foster design-thinking and the development of creative approaches to make contributions to society and tackle the challenges of our time, and the success of the two students is testament to the great talent at creativity at NCAD.”
Work from 225 emerging artists and designers is currently on display at NCAD as part of the NCAD Show, the college’s annual graduate exhibition. The exhibition features the work of graduates from NCAD's Schools of Fine Art, Design and Education, together with postgraduates from the MFA in Fine Art, MFA in Digital Art and MFA Design programmes, and will remain open to the public until Sunday, 16th June.
