NCAD welcomes seven new members to An Bord of the National College of Art and Design, and new Chair Designate

NCAD is delighted to welcome seven new members to An Bord of the National College of Art and Design, and the appointment of a new Chair Designate, following appointments made by the Minister of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

Charlotte Barker

Charlotte Barker is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Designers in Ireland, the trade association representing commercial designers from across the Irish design industry and a wide breadth of disciplines. Charlotte sits on the Government Forum for Digital Creative Industries and supports the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform to progress the action plan for Designing Better Public Services. 

With over 20 years of experience in the design sector Charlotte’s career has taken her across the globe between the UK, North America and Ireland, strategically leading brand communications work for consumer brands, public services and semi-state organisations, including the rebranding of the Irish National Telecoms service, eircom to eir, in 2016.

She won the 2017 Institute of Advertising Practitioners Ireland (IAPI) Doyenne Award for Women in Leadership and was subsequently elected to the IAPI board.

Ger Casey

Ger Casey is the Chief Executive Officer of the Grangegorman Development Agency (GDA) and a registered architect. He has over 25 years of public and private sector experience in the design and development of the built environment. He was pivotal in the design of the Grangegorman Masterplan and in the establishment of the GDA, taking on different roles before becoming CEO in 2016. Ger is passionate about delivering sustainable, high-quality built environments that have long-lasting positive impacts on people and their settings; and is skilled in devising corporate strategies, building organisational capabilities and leading teams to successful outcomes. Ger is a member of the Association of Chief Executives of State Agencies (ACESA) and the Institute of Directors (IoD), with a postgraduate diploma in Company Direction. 

Liv Harrington 

Liv Harrington is the President of the Student Union of NCAD. She has completed a 4 year BA in Design with Visual Cultures in NCAD and is running the union between summer 2024-2025.

As President, Liv is responsible for the general management of the Union and is the representative of all students. She also works as the Officer for Education, Academic Affairs, Campaigns and Events. 

Liv works to help the students’ voices be heard, to facilitate communication between students and staff, and to help students have the best possible time in NCAD, in all areas ranging from social to academic. 

Derek Lande 

Derek Lande is a Managing Director for Accenture’s Technology Strategy business. He specialises in digital transformation and collaborates with executive teams and boards to help set and execute their strategies. Derek is passionate about education. In addition to having previously served as a member of NCAD’s Audit & Risk Committee, Derek is a non-executive director of the UCC Academy, a subsidiary of UCC providing professional services to support the University’s strategic projects, initiatives and partnerships. He has worked extensively with talented young people, playing a key role in bringing the World Universities Debating Championships to Cork in 2009 and formerly the coach of the Irish World Schools Debating Team. 

Aoife McInerney

Aoife McInerney is a design educator and graphic designer with an accomplished career spanning over two decades. She honed her expertise through diverse roles, including nearly ten years at the renowned Natural History Museum in London, where she was instrumental in content dissemination and design direction. In her current position as Assistant Lecturer and Programme Coordinator on the Graphic Design Programme at the National College of Art and Design, Aoife oversees creative initiatives, helps shape the programme’s vision and ensures inclusive, impactful design education.

Drawing on her extensive experience in collaboration and strategic planning, Aoife has expanded her influence beyond the classroom to community-driven projects and cultural events. She also serves as the programme manager for the Dunlavin Arts Festival, championing creativity and community through a multidisciplinary celebration of the arts, where art serves as a catalyst for environmental awareness and action.

Siobhán Moriarty

Siobhán Moriarty is the former General Counsel and Company Secretary of Diageo plc. She joined Diageo in 1997, becoming General Counsel and joining the Executive Committee in 2013. She is recognised as having been instrumental in Diageo’s evolution from its formation in 1997, bringing commercial focus to the legal remit and making a valuable contribution to its long-term success.  External recognition includes: FT Top 20 General Counsel 2017; FT and HERoes Champions of Women in Business 2017 and 2018; and Cranfield Female FTSE Board Report 100 Women to Watch 2022. Siobhán has been a non-executive director of the Friends Board of the Royal Academy of Arts in London since 2018 and became Chair of the Friends Board in 2023. She was also appointed a Trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2023.

Paul Stack

Paul Stack is the Managing Director of Marco Beverage Systems, a pioneering Irish company dedicated to delivering excellence in beverage experiences through cutting-edge hot and cold beverage preparation and dispensing equipment. Under Paul’s leadership, Marco has become renowned for its commitment to user-centred design and innovation.

An alumnus of NCAD with a degree in Industrial Design, Paul holds postgraduate diplomas in Manufacturing Management (IMI), Strategic R&D (INSEAD), and Strategic Leadership (IMD).

Paul is a respected voice in the global coffee and beverage industry, having served as President of the Specialty Coffee Association and being recognised with the prestigious European Coffee Industry Outstanding Contribution Award for his impact on the sector.

 

These new members of An Bord join:

Dr Carole Pollard FRIAI - Chairperson Designate

Carole Pollard is a registered architect, architectural historian and past president of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland. She teaches at the School of Architecture Building & Environment at TU Dublin, where she is the Programme Chair for the Professional Diploma in Architectural Practice. She is co-editor of Volume III of 'More Than Concrete Blocks - Dublin City's twentieth-century Buildings and Their Stories' and is the Irish co-ordinating editor for the upcoming Bloomsbury Global Encyclopedia of Women in Architecture.

John Paul Dowling 

John Paul Dowling is the Head of the Department of Communication Design at the National College of Art & Design (NCAD) in Dublin, where he oversees the academic and strategic development of four undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He has over 20 years of experience in typographic research, education, and practice, and holds prestigious fellowships from the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and the International Society of Typographic Designers (FISTD).

As a recognised leader and speaker in his field, John Paul has contributed to various international design conferences and institutions, such as TypeCon, ARLIS, OFFSET, ICTVC, and AtypI. He has also exhibited and published his work widely, receiving accolades from the Design Museum, the European Design Awards, and The Irish Times. He is passionate about exploring the role and impact of typography in culture, society, and politics, and engaging with diverse and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Cian McHugh

Cian McHugh is the International Officer in the Academic Registry Office of NCAD. With over 15 years of experience in higher education, he has spent the last 10 years as part of the central academic registry team at NCAD. In his role, Cian is responsible for managing NCAD’s international partnerships and facilitating student and staff exchanges under the Erasmus+ programme.
