Commoning and Radical Care, A SPACEX RISE Symposium

Friday 3 March, 2023, 09:30 – 20:30 GMT

This symposium considers how commoning and radical care practices offer an alternative path beyond the neoliberal discourse of value.

Commoning is a desire for a more socially equitable society. Its central tenet is the belief that social relationships can replace financial ones, and, to these ends, commoners aim to reverse Capitalism’s ‘enclosure’ of the commons so that all can have an equal share in humanities’ resources. This event considers how commoning and radical care practices, with their goal of producing forms of social wealth (rather than monetizable values), offer an alternative path beyond the neoliberal discourse of value.

This event forms part of the SPACEX-RISE research action. Spatial Practices in Art and ArChitecture for Empathetic EXchange (SPACEX) is an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral knowledge-transfer and research initiative. It aims to test the ways in which spatial practices in art, architecture and design instigate public exchange and promote empathetic ways of living together in urban space. It responds to the troubling rise of populist nationalism and conflict in European societies, which has come about as a result of mass immigration, the perceived surrender of national sovereignty to remote international bodies, and the demise of public spaces in which people can meet and exchange diverging opinions and conflicting interests. Central to spatial practice is the goal of engaging new publics and fostering meaningful partnerships, thereby forging a culture that embraces diversity, difference, and discursive exchange within cities, towns and urban sites.
