Athbheochan: Type, Revival, and Ideas of Irishness Max Phillips and Mary Ann Bolger

Friday January 31st 1-2pm Harry Clarke Lecture Theatre, NCAD, Thomas St, Dublin 8, D08 K521.

What does it mean to "revive" a historic style? What are the implications in terms of production, mediation and consumption? In this talk, typeface designer Max Phillips of Signal Type Foundry and design historian Dr Mary Ann Bolger of TU Dublin's Typography Ireland consider the problem of revival in relation to Gaelic, Gaelic-like, and Uncial typefaces. Signal Type is in the process of reviving Tuam Uncial, designed by Jarlath Hayes in the 1970s, which Mary Ann has previously written about from a design-historical perspective. Max and Mary Ann consider questions of revival and the symbolism of type rather differently. Their presentation will discuss the issues and challenges involved in revival from the points of view of past and present.

Mary Ann Bolger is a lecturer in design history and programme chair of the BA in Visual and Critical Studies at the TU Dublin School of Creative Arts. She programmes the research group Typography Ireland with Clare Bell and represents Ireland as country delegate to ATypI. She received her doctorate, on mid-twentieth century Irish graphic design and typography, from the Royal College of Art, London.

Max Phillips is proprietor of the Dublin-based Signal Type Foundry & Drawing Office, which specializes in type design, lettering, and branding. His work has been recognised by the Type Directors Club of New York, Communication Arts, Graphis, ICAD, and the ISTD.
