6 NCAD students nominated for 2019/20 RSA Student Design Awards

Competing against entries from over 25 countries, the Department of Product Design students produced innovative design proposals to tackle pressing social, environmental and economic issues.

Six NCAD Product Design students have been shortlisted in the highly prestigious 2019/20 RSA Student Design Awards.

The Royal Society of the Arts Student Design Awards was established in 1924, making it the world’s longest-running student competition and the premier global programme focused on design for social change. NCAD has an impressive track record of success in these awards over the years.

Project Name: Ardú
Tagline: Learning without Limits

Jack Canavan & Sabhín O’Sullivan have designed a system to support displaced individuals to find hope, dignity and safety to rebuild their lives.

Ardú is an online platform that provides free courses and mentorship programmes to women living in Direct Provision Centres. It connects them to working professionals who act as mentors throughout the duration of their course.

Project Name: Grace
Tagline: Life is better with friends

Kipras Pasakinskas & Linas Staniukynas, have explored how we can use AI to support people to reach a happy, meaningful and productive one hundred year life.

An AI-powered dynamic service database, supporting the innovative practice of Social Prescribing by providing Link Workers an always up-to-date list of local services that they can refer socially isolated older people to.

Project Name: Chiru
Tagline: Keeping sustainable fashion local

Róisín Maher & Kirsten Whelan, have proposed how we can adopt circular design principles to innovate the way we produce, use and access everyday clothing items.

Chiru is a rewards scheme that encourages people to shop more sustainably through receiving non-consumerist rewards by supporting local communities and establishments. Chiru benefits the environment by circulating what we already have.

The students now move into the final stage of judging, where finalists are invited to discuss their competition entry with the judging panels. 

Winners will be announced in May 2020, so fingers firmly crossed for Jack, Sabhín, Kipras, Linas, Róisín and Kirsten!
