What a year!

If one discipline is primed to be resilient in a time of crisis, surely it’s design. Design is evolving to become an increasingly elastic and extensive field that addresses the major challenges of our time. Made up of problem solvers, inventors, thinkers, strategists, activists, makers and entrepreneurs, design students at NCAD are educated to find solutions for social, cultural, commercial and virtual life.

Of course, nobody could have anticipated the extreme challenges of continuing to study studio-based courses while attempting to navigate the impact of Covid-19. We are immensely proud of our students and staff in successfully adjusting to new models of learning. Being able to successfully pivot projects and reconsider fundamental approaches to their practice during the pandemic demonstrates a truly remarkable resilience, ingenuity and agility that will equip them well in their future careers.

Despite the unprecedented circumstances, our graduating students have produced some remarkable work which you can explore throughout this site, and I am delighted that we have been able to see the careful return of graduates to campus during our Maker’s Month, helping them to complete aspects of their physical creations.

The role of the designer is expanding from shape-giver to facilitator, and from ‘me’ to ‘we’. The diverse range of work on show demonstrates how our graduates are proactively addressing the future of design. Design alone isn’t a panacea to the complexity of our current and future situations, but we believe it is instrumental in shaping and co-creating a better future for us all and this year’s graduates are uniquely placed to respond to the ‘new normal’.

Our graduates continue to be recognised nationally and internationally. Eight NCAD students have been shortlisted for the Arts Thread Global Design Graduate Awards 2020 – drawn from a pool of more than 4,400 international entries. Design students have also been shortlisted for the Feel the Yarn international fashion award and the RSA Global Student Awards.

Join me in celebrating this year’s wonderfully inspiring design graduates, and recognising the importance of creative people and creative education in complex and challenging times.
