Janine Davidson
Janine Davidson is a visual artist with a multi-disciplinary practice currently working in the Firestation Artist Studios, Dublin. She is a master printmaker and member of the Blackchurch Print Studio, At Home Studios and the Hugh Lane Gallery panel of artists, guides and lecturers. Her work is primarily lens-based incorporating the use of both digital and analogue technologies. It is often site-specific exploring contexts for still and moving images. She uses photography interpreted through photo-etching and digital printmaking techniques, as well as film through immersive installations. Davidsons collaborative projects have been funded by Arts Council of Ireland, the British Council, CDETB, Digital Hub, Dormant Account Funds, Dublin City Council Community Grants, Dublin Port Authority, Fundación Botín, National Learning Network, Royal Ulster Academy and Grangegorman Development Agency.
Language defines culture and culture defines language, and these processes are largely shaped by the environment we live in and are continuously evolving. In this context, I developed and produced ‘Study in Grey’, a film poem which is a juxtaposition of landscape and language, and seeks to explore constructs of strata and stratum. The production involved the recording of multi-channel audio narration, and the integration of digital still imagery. Using the recording sound booth at the Firestation, I collaborated with students and academics from the UCD community, to record audio narration in Dutch, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Papiamento.
Through my current research with Senior Lecturers in Linguistics at UCD and at the University of Edinburgh. I am developing a new experimental film work exploring languages, and their use in postcolonial contexts. The ambition is to develop our interests through discussion and shared research to explore ideas for future collaboration. This new work will further deepen the research themes of ‘Study in Grey”, developing a new series of works exploring identity, language and the self in society.
