New technologies in art and design, specifically the potential of industrial CAD for embrodiery. An example of this was the 'Mechanical Drawing- The Schiffli Project', at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Of all the industrial processes of producing machine embroidered fabrics the simplicity and purity of the pantograph schiffli is exceptional. It offers possibilities to create unique surface qualities and the ability to explore repetition on a scale that is simply unachievable by any other means. During 2007 I was asked to be part of the Mechanical Drawing Research project devised by Dr Melanie Miller from Manchester Metropolitan University. This was a pro-active attempt to raise the profile of this machine by inviting International artists to produce work for a touring group show, with accompanying 60-page catalogue and explanatory DVD.
Illustrating the Mexican legend of the 'Rabbit Moon' through textiles, became a vehicle to combine simple repetitive 'pulled work' stitch structures of the Pantograph Schiffli with hand stitch work onto digitally printed fabrics.
The work of all 15 artists including Alice Kettle, Lynn Setterington toured extensively in the UK Nov 16th – December 14th 2007 Holden Gallery, Manchester Metropolitan University March 8th – April 27th 2008 The Hub Sleaford May 3rd – June 29th 2008 Fairfield Mill Arts and Heritage Centre, Sedburgh July 5th- September 7th 2008 Macclesfield Silk Museum Autumn 2008 The Knitting and Stitching show, Birmingham, London, Harrogate
