Born in Belfast, where Mc Garry completed a degree in three dimensional design at the University of Ulster, before achieving a Masters of Arts degree from New Mexico State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from San Diego State University in the USA. Mc Garry worked as a studio practitioner and university lecturer in the USA before becoming a metals lecturer at the NCAD. Having obtained significant international design awards, his metalwork is included in the permanent collection at the National Museum of Ireland and Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in Dublin, as well as international private collections. In 2004, he was appointed to the General Panel of Experts - Higher Education and Training Awards Council, Ireland. He has presented design research in Australia, China, Finland, Italy, and the USA. McGarry has organised and curated several high profile international craft exhibitions in Ireland. Mc Garry was elected President Institute of Designers in Ireland 2010.
Having continued to maintain his studio practice for many years, making and exhibiting metalwork, Mc Garry has more recently been researching multidisciplinary taught postgraduate programmes, as well as creating NCAD links to the indigenous design industry. Using this research, the Metals Area established a five year knowledge transfer partnership with Newbridge Silverware in 2005. This has provided students with the opportunity to gain work placement experience and to further develop computer aided design knowledge, while enabling company to expand their contemporary design work. This research has been presented and published internationally.
As Acting Head of the Ceramics, Glass and Metals department, McGarry formed the Ceramics, Glass and Metals Research Team in 2006. His research was focused on the utilisation of new technology for craft design. In 2008, he set-up the Roland Ireland postgraduate digital research laboratory at the NCAD. With direct links to industry, this facility provides both a new technology research and training centre for two and three dimensional multidisciplinary design. Disseminating this research, McGarry has organised a series of continuous professional development computer aided design courses for staff and students. In 2009, he established an NCAD computer aided design training agreement with the international McNeel software company and Simply Rhino.
During his two year secondment as Deputy to the Head of the Design Faculty, 2007-09, Mc Garry organised two important international design research conferences at the NCAD. 'What is Design Added Value?' and 'Invisible Boundaries-NCAD 24 hour Design Challenge' conferences set out to establish important cross-sector collaborative research partnerships. Consequently, a number of key interdisciplinary, cross-sector, NCAD research clusters have now been created, including the Design Ethics Group and User-First, to drive forward important research strands. Mc Garry is working closely with teams of interdepartmental staff to continue to create important postgraduate research opportunities, including the government funded Recycling Educational Playground two year masters Project in Ballymun, Dublin. In recent months, Mc Garry has presented and published this ongoing research internationally.
