Research

My personal research is motivated by a passionate interest in the human consequences of politics, culture and history. I have exhibited paintings, prints and drawings on this theme in sixteen solo exhibitions. My love of books has also lead to the publication of two ‘artist’s books’ on the subject: The State We’re Out which recounts my father’s emigration from Mayo in 1951; and A Life in Relief which tells the remarkable story of Michael Davitt, one of the foremost Irish figures of the Nineteenth Century and founder of the Land League.
Visual communicators have a privileged position within the nexus of contemporary culture and my commissioned work has dealt with art, commerce, education, TV and publishing in print, on screen and in the public realm. The clients I have worked with include: Abacus Books, Abbey National, ABTA, Cadburys, Dillons Bookstore, Hewlett Packard, Hugh Lane Municipal Art Gallery, Independent Newspapers Ltd, RTÉ and Wolfhound Press.
The uniting factors between my personal and commercial work, are that the outcomes are always allusive to the theme I am dealing with; they are contextually anchored; and I aim to make them visually arresting and aesthetically alluring.
