Introduction: Research through Fine Art
The Fine Art Faculty has always maintained a very high-level of engagement with the broader contexts of art beyond the College itself, and prides itself on the standing of staff as recognised practitioners within their fields. Members of the Faculty staff are represented and active in all aspects of the art world ranging from direct involvement with innovative local and national initiatives throughout Ireland to inclusion in the major international fairs such as the Armory, Basil and Frieze.
In support of the research culture of the Faculty, staff present, participate and organise international exhibitions, conferences and seminars. Staff are involved in developing dynamic high profile international visiting lecturer programmes; staff organise international field trips and study visits. Recent field trips have included visits to New York, the World Social Forum in Brazil, the Liverpool Biennale, London and the Venice Biennale. Members of the Faculty have also recently participated in research workshops and seminars in Luxembourg (“Artists in Learning Communities”), Antwerp (EARN), London (EARN), Berlin (“Research in and through the Arts”, ELIA) and Bergen, Norway. Students and staff avail of Erasmus Exchange programmes at postgraduate level and the department has exchange agreements - and is developing new ones - across old and new Europe. Particular exchange arrangements have also included the USA.
