Postgraduate Study in Design: MA & PhD
Areas of Study in Design
Department of Ceramics, Glass & Metals
Since the first MA graduated from the Department of Ceramics, Glass and Metals in 1992, the number of individuals applying to the programme has steadily increased. The first year of the MA is seen as an exploratory period where concepts, techniques and materials are questioned and investigated. Typically, the second year employs and further develops the information gathered in year one and is devoted to the production of completed works. Postgraduate students will discuss the expansion of their work with their supervisors on a well defined schedule, and also as needed. Throughout both years the students meet with a department staff panel every six weeks for a formal review. Reports are then written and discussed with the student. While candidates normally opt to work in one of the 3 areas of the department, the full range of departmental facilities are available to the student, allowing for the combined use of materials. The department expects its MA students to be based in the College. Candidates with proven studio facilities outside the College can make a learning contract with the department to also work from home. In such cases, students must regularly bring their work to all scheduled formal and informal reviews in the College.
