Research at NCAD
As Ireland’s independent college for art and design since 1746, a key part of NCAD’s role is to promote a wider understanding of the value and meaning of research in, through, and about art and design.
Art and design have a crucial contribution to make to the cultural and intellectual enrichment of Ireland, and to Ireland’s capacity to create a sustainable knowledge based economy and society. The research in, through and about art and design at NCAD is oriented towards the real worlds of art and design practice – focused upon disciplinary excellence, relevance to contemporary art and design contexts, engagement with industry and diverse communities, and upon informing art, design and education policy.
The practitioners, educationalists and researchers of distinction who make up the NCAD community are engaged in research into all aspects of art and design, including practice, education, history, criticism and theory. Current research priorities within the College, reflecting clusters of expertise in research and practice include:
- user-centred design practice
- creative and critical pedagogies
- participatory culture
- modern Irish design history and material culture
- contemporary art and philosophy
