International Society of Typographic Designers Student Awards

NCAD Staff and Students collect Awards in London

On Friday 8 July 2016, twelve students from the Department of Visual Communication descended on London for the annual International Society of Typographic Designers Student Awards. Hosted by Pentagram at their studio in Notting Hill with one of the newest partners Luke Powell presenting the certificates to the successful students and tutors. It was an evening of great success for NCAD, not only for the students but also staff. Tutors Ed McGinly and Bobby Tannam both receiving awards in recognition for the supporting role they played in the student successes.

This presentation evening was for the main Student Assessment scheme held in the UK, Ireland and the Middle-East. It is an international education scheme and the assessments for other regions of the globe are still on-going. NCAD was confirmed the third best performing institution in the Northern Hemisphere for 2016 on the night.

NCAD Head of Department: Visual Communication; John Paul Dowling who is also Education Director of ISTD (to his surprise) was awarded Fellowship to the society on the night. Fellowship of the society may be offered to a member nominated in recognition of their professional standing, or for services to the Society. Nominations may be made by any member supported by three fellows of at least two years’ standing, citing evidence of the nominee's work and distinction, and ratified by the board.

Freda Sack FISTD: “As you know, John Paul took over our education work from Prof. John McMillan and in a relatively short space of time has ensured that the student assessment scheme continues to flourish. It has also developed further into new countries and this year we welcomed many assessors from abroad. John's tireless work on the Society's behalf to promote our education work both in the UK and overseas deserves recognition.”
