The Edward Murphy Library
Welcome to the Edward Murphy Library at NCAD. The Library has an unrivalled collection of over 96,000 books and exhibition catalogues. A major emphasis of the collection is on 19th, 20th and 21st century art and design, but material from a large number of other subject areas is also available.
The collection is chiefly on open access, but a sizeable portion of the collection is kept in storage and must be ordered in advance - check the Library catalogue for full information about our holdings. There are also closed access special collections of rare and valuable books and of materials relating to Irish art and design. These collections are housed in the National Irish Visual Arts Library.
The Library subscribes to about 300 magazines and these offer an international view of the subjects taught in the College. Comprehensive back runs of many of these periodicals are available and the Library’s electronic databases give access to these and others that we do not hold in hardcopy.
Users also have access to a range of image databases. They can download these images for study or teaching purposes. There is a separate Visual Resources Centre in the Library with a lending collection of DVDs.
An important part of the Library service is the Learning Centre. Introductory tours of the Library are given to all new students. In-depth tutorials on research methods are provided for students who are commencing major projects and theses.
The first port of call for all users requiring assistance is the Issue Desk. The staff working in this area have experience of studying and working in the field of art and design, and they are happy to help users with reference enquiries, as well as those who need help in using the Library’s collections or services.
