Serials
Serials are a very important source of information for research. They offer
- Information that is up-to-date
- Information on new subjects
- Information on a very wide range of subjects
- In-depth information on specialized subjects
- Information and opinions from many different writers.
NCAD Library subscribes to a wide range of art and design serials. The serials index (available from the issue desk and the Learning Centre) gives details of the Library’s holdings. Serials are for reading in the Library only. Students may photocopy material from serials, provided that copying conforms to current copyright legislation.
Recent serials are displayed in the Old Reading Room. They are shelved in two separate sequences. One sequence can be found on the display stands, the other in the red plastic cartons on either side of the display stands. Both sequences are arranged in alphabetical order by title. Irish serials are displayed in NIVAL (which is now located in the old Visual Culture building).
Back issues (published prior to the current academic year) are kept in store. To order serials from store, users must fill out a Store Request Form and hand it in at the issue desk. These forms can be found on the display stand beside the OPACs in the Old Reading Room. Depending on where the back run is stored, it may take between 30 minutes and one day for delivery of items ordered. Serials ordered from store should be returned to the Issue Desk.
Art and Design Databases
The Library offers a range of online databases to assist users in searching for articles and images in serials. These reference tools enable researchers to pinpoint relevant material. In some cases the databases offer the full text of journal articles; in others they provide full bibliographical details and an abstract summarizing the contents of the text.
