‘Dublin 8 Art by Dublin 8 Artists’, a retrospective of the work of RADE’

Dublin 8 Art by Dublin 8 Artists is a retrospective of work by the innovative RADE Project, which will display work from RADE”s arts programme over the last five years at the National College of Art and Design Gallery. Works of visual art, film and creative writing by RADE’s different participants many of them local to the Dublin 8 area, will be presented. The works of art reflect the journey of both the organisation and, importantly, of those who have participated in it over the last half decade. The exhibition will also mark the launch of a new collection of creative writing by RADE’s Participants, entitled Portraits, with a forward by poet Paula Meehan.
RADE has been operating in the Dublin 8 area since 2004 and has, in that time, worked with local people across a range of disciplines, from painting, drawing and sculpture through to film making and creative writing. The RADE programme enables participants to engage with their creativity and carry this skill into other areas of their lives, such as education and employment. The work done by RADE’s members is testament to the capacity of all people to make a positive contribution, firmly dispelling the negative labels and stereo-types associated with those affect by drug use. RADE continues to uphold the high standard of work it has achieved in original art, theatre and film productions, and creative writing. The artistic achivements of this group are an affirmation of how creativity, when coupled with a true desire to change, can help people refocus their lives, and produce work that is reflective of themselves and their community.
NCAD Gallery is pleased to present this major retrospective of this invaluable community organisation. The exhibition will represent a variety of approaches to the use of the arts – visual and performing – in empowering individuals who would otherwise have had little contact with arts practice. It is important work in a social context but the process also connects to a wider dynamic in contemporary art practice, nationally and internationally, which focuses on the potential for the arts to engage social contexts and to empower individuals and communities. Social engagement is also area of growing interest in art and design teaching and learning, in the College and generally. The project is also intended to mark a longer term working relationship between NCAD and RADE in the context of the college’s location in Dublin 8.
