Ciarán Swan graduated from NCAD in 1990. In 1992 he completed a post-graduate Diploma in Arts Administration in UCD and in 1998 he completed an MA in Design History, specialising in the imagery of Irish political parties. In 2005 he completed a PhD in Design History on the imagery of the state and semi-state organisations in Ireland, North and South from 1920.
He has worked in London as a magazine designer, worked freelance in Dublin for a range of corporate and arts sector clients, and as Communications Manager for a group of companies and as studio tutor in Visual Communications. He currently works directly in the area of political design and identity in Dáil Éireann. He also advises in the area of Archaeological consultancy.
He lectures in Design History and visual and material culture in the NCAD and on the Design History MA Course. He has delivered papers based to the Political Studies Association of Ireland, the Irish Association of Art Historians, the Design History Society (UK) amongst others. He has also published his research in a number of magazines and newspapers including CIRCA magazine. He is a founder member of the Design Research Group.
He is a member of the Political Studies Association of Ireland and recently joined the Curatorial Committee of the National Print Museum.
His areas of research expertise include broad design history, design research, material and visual culture and contemporary design.
