Director's Introduction
Colm Ó Briain
I am very pleased to mark my first term as Director of the National College of Art and Design with some introductory remarks to Thoughtlines 6.
The vitality of the research being undertaken in any college is a good indication of the quality of the learning experience, which the college provides. The reader of these essays cannot but be impressed by the diversity and excellence of the research work being carried out in this College.
The importance of the anthology in making the work of our students accessible to a wider audience cannot be over emphasised. It is also a matter of considerable pride to all of us in NCAD that these essays represent, in microcosm, the values which inform all of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses, which the College makes available.
Research is not only the lifeblood of this College. It also makes an invaluable contribution to the rigour of cultural discourse in Ireland. I hope that the topics covered in the following pages will stimulate fresh ideas about art and design in our society over the coming years.
