Mary A. Fitzgerald
A Composite Form
Central to this work is an investigation of drawing in its broadest sense and of how the images and their meaning are transformed by their positioning together and their placement in a public space. This selection of work originates from appropriated images, which have a particular visual currency for me as an artist. The premise of this work is to engage with the viewer. My interest lies in the visual propositions created by composite forms and configurations and the use of the multiple. Using existing and commonplace images, the work presents a range of clues in sequences, which suggest dual meaning and an underlying sense of unease. The sequences invoke a flowing rhythm along the wall, an interplay between abstraction and figuration. The images expose the complexity of understanding in what is read or seen. The work positions itself between meaning, humor and malevolence, visual spectacle and pathos.
