Keeping Time
This work is comprised of a short video and sound piece that depicts time, space, light and movement. It is an exploration of a fixed space that evokes associations with the past and exists in the heart of a modern 21st century city. There are a number of oppositions at play in the video; darkness and light, inside and outside, presence and absence, old and new, serenity and frenzy. The presence of light illuminates and reveals the space. What appears with clarity one moment becomes obscured the next by the absence of light. Perceptions of time have always been a central idea in my work. Time is a universal language, yet it is perhaps the least commonly understood. Fundamentally, our awareness and consciousness is of an instantaneous present that is continually being transformed into a remembered past as it is replaced with an anticipated future. The video work explores this continuous phenomenon by drawing on two diverse points in time, encompassing the last millenium.
