Painting

BA in Fine Art
BA in History of Art and Fine Art

The notion of Painting in the early 21st Century encompasses a broad spectrum of artistic possibilities, within these perimeters the specific aim of the painting course is to formulate a methodology appropriate to individual students needs and sensibilities.

Course Description

Year 2 is described in 'About Fine Art'

The beginning of year 3 is project based and designed to encourage group interaction and discussion over a broad range of concepts. As year 3 develops the emphasis shifts from the collective to the individual in order to encourage self directed research.

A system of individual and group tutorials enables the students to broaden their visual awareness and intellectual clarity through engagement with a multi-layer practice, covering a full range of contemporary art possibilities. In highly specialised areas of research workshops can be organised with other faculties or departments at tutorial level.

In essence third year is not just about building skills, but also developing the students confidence in covering the broadest possible conceptual solutions to visual art in preparation for 4th Year.

During 4th Year students begin to develop personal studio methodologies. The main teaching interaction is based on the principle of personal tutorial guidance geared to acknowledge student advancement, towards their becoming professional practising artists or participants in the cultural sector. Group tutorials, debate structures and visiting artists are seen as essential aspects of the course and ensure the continuing rigour in the challenge and questioning of visual art practice.

The course offers a series of programmed seminars in professional practice covering areas such as administration, community, curatorial, legal, and tax issues which are now essential to the day-to-day life of the contemporary artist.

Students work towards a major presentation of their work at the end of the academic year.
