Media
BA in Fine Art
BA in History of Art and Fine Art
The aim of the course is to develop skills in media: video, information technology, photography, sound and the modern technologies that generate visual imagery.
The Media Department provides the technical facilities to enable students to work in video, computing, sound, photography and their combinations in installation and performance. The department's philosophy responds to the currency of the above media in the wider world beyond art, and students within the department are encouraged to consider their work in a broad social context. As a consequence of this approach students can produce work which occurs beyond the gallery e.g. as a web site or as a tv intervention. Equally students working collaboratively are encouraged to do so.
At this time of great technological convergence as exemplified by virtual reality, students are encouraged to work across media barriers in order to create new forms and new ways of engaging with an audience. This recognition of audience and a willingness to make work that positions the viewer as active participant within the work is a defining characteristic of the department.
Initial introduction to the Media Area occurs in the first term of the second year. This introduction involves a consideration of the individual media included within the Department and their relationship to one another. In the third and fourth year the tutorial system identifies the individual requirements of each student. A Visiting Artist programme supplements the tutorial system.
