The Course encourages students to explore printmaking in its broadest sense and seeks to develop each student's individual creative potential. The processes of Intaglio, Screen-printing and Lithography are explored as well as up to date approaches to digital capture, photography and multi media. There is a good range of new technology resources including scanners, large format printer and a range of computers. Video and digital cameras are available for hire and both installation and sound work can be investigated. Internet access is available for research purposes. Projects are set in all media with emphasis placed upon the use of the appropriate technology/process for the expansion and exploration of ideas and their expression. Projects serve to relate process to concept and to encourage a range of artistic solutions to be employed in developing an individual's artistic language.
The Department has both full-time and part-time staff with a range of artistic expertise. All staff are research active art practioners.
The Department annually works with an international college on a joint print project. Each student cohort exhibits where possible at least once during their year in a commercial gallery
Within Fine Print it is possible for students from other disciplines to work within Printmaking having completed Elective Blocks in years 2 and 3.
Course Description
Emphasis is placed on the development of intellectual, creative and critical abilities. Both traditional and new technologies are explored for their role in the development of creative thinking and expression as well as for their reprographic potential.
The tutorial system is designed to identify the requirements of individual students through on going discussion between staff and students. Individual tutorials and group crits are held at regular intervals. Because of the workshop based nature of much of the work there is constant contact between staff and students. A visiting artist programme ensures the student has a vital contact with current artistic practice.
The workshop also allows for video/film to be accessed on TV monitor.
Students who graduate within Fine Print are both creatively and technically competent to produce their own work. They are computer literate, multi-skilled individuals possessing a range of practical and professional skills relevant to a variety of career options within the Creative Arts.
