Alex Scott, DipAD, MDes, RCA, MIDI
Lecturer, Studio Practice Ceramics and 3D Studies
Alex Scott graduated from the Ulster College of Art and Design in 1972, and from the Royal College of Art in 1975 with an MDes, in Ceramics and Glass. Alex has worked at the Rosenthal design studios in Germany, lectured full-time in design at Hong Kong Polytechnic 1975-1977, and worked as a tableware designer in industry. In 1983 he joined the Faculty of Education as a full-time lecturer in Studio Practice Ceramics and 3D Studies.
Alex is member of the Institute of Designers in Ireland, and a member of Irish Contemporary Ceramics.
His current research is studio-based practice. The direction of the work has two main influences. One is a Classical influence, which deals with proportion and ideas related to architecture and the relationship of forms within a defined space. There is also an Oriental influence running through the work whereby he explores the qualities suggested by pose, mood, attitude, and the spiritual qualities, which are contained within the forms. Asymmetry, for long a feature of the work is also a source of influence.
He continues to explore the shifting and unpredictable relationships, which result as a consequence of the various vantage points of the viewer.
