Frequently asked questions – Certificate Courses
Continuing education offers three National University of Ireland Certificate courses:
- Drawing and Visual Investigation (DVI)
- Photography and Digital Imaging (PDI)
- Design (Metals or Ceramics) (Design)
All of the above courses are at level 6 within the National Qualifications Framework and carry credits which students can transfer within Higher Education.
How long are the Certificate courses?
Each course is approximately 24 weeks long involving a minimum of two nights per week and some weekend sessions. Approximately 140 contact hours and as many hours of self directed learning.
When do the courses take place?
Drawing and Visual Investigation takes place on Tuesday and Friday evening.
Photography and Digital Imaging takes place on Monday and Thursday evening.
Normally courses commence at 6.15 and run until 9.15.
What do I need to access a Certificate course?
Students need to complete an application form and submit a portfolio in advance. For details of submission dates contact cead@ncad.ie or phone 01 636 4214.
Requirements for accessing Certificate courses include
- a willingness to experiment
- a portfolio of work
- a commitment to developing an art and design practice
- an understanding of notebooks as a resource for ideas development
Will I be assessed and will I have to do an exam?
Assessment is part of the Certificate courses. However there are no exams involved. Students will take part in group crit and will submit practical work and essays for assessment by their tutors. Assessment is continuous and students are required to pass module assignments to complete the course.
Will I have to present my visual work?
Yes, as part of group crit and assessment you will present your work to your peers and to course tutors. Also selected student work will form part of the end of year exhibition.
