Neil Read, Post Grad Degree. Edinburgh College of Art
Head of Department, Ceramics, Glass & Metals
BA Degree with ‘Distinction’ (Edin), Ceramics and Stained Glass, 1975.
Post Graduate Degree (Edin), 1976.
Neil Read was appointed to the staff of NCAD in 1982.
He has exhibited in Europe, China and North America. His work is held in public collections including the Irish National Collection, The National Museum of Ireland, The Royal Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh), and The National Porcelain Museum, Jingdezhen (China).
Residencies at Haystack International School of the Crafts, Deer Island, Maine, USA and The Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute, Jingdezhen, China have influenced his work.
Infinity, time, order and chaos inform his work and the Raku process, which he favours, gives vitality to his ceramics. His one-off, hand-built wall pieces are usually produced in limited series such as “geometric” and “Oval Orbit”.
He has lectured at Sydney College of Art, Lewis and Clarke University Portland, The Oregon School of the Crafts, Parsons School of Design, New York, San Jose State University, California and Ontario College of Art, Canada.
In 2007 Read lead a specialist ceramics tour of China visiting the Terra Cotta Army, the Great Wall and residency centres in Fuping, Sanbao and Jingdezhen. He assisted in the running of the Glass Society of Ireland’s workshop conference in 2000, co-ordinated The Sculpture Society of Ireland’s “Master Class Workshops” featuring Eduardo Paulozzi in 1988 and the Lillemore Peterson ceramics workshop during the World Craft Council Conference at NCAD in 1983.
He is a founding member and Chair of Irish Contemporary Ceramics and has served on the board of the Crafts Council of Ireland.
