Andrew Campbell, BA(Hons), MA , PGCE
Lecturer, Printed Textiles

Andrew Campbell, who has a degree in Textile Design and Design Management (UMIST) as well as an MA in Printed Textiles for Fashion (Central St. Martins) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education has worked extensively in the UK and abroad in the Textile Design/Fashion industry.

Andrew has worked in the design industry for 12 years before working full-time as a lecturer within the Department of Fashion & Textiles.

He worked as a designer first for Tootal - Manchester in a division that produced wax printed/Batik - fabrics for the African Market. With a strong interest in ethnic textiles and travel this proved to be a good start. Even Paul Smith saw the potential in the textiles produced that were used by him in a menswear shirting collection.

Following his MA at Central St. Martins School of Art in London he worked for Timney and Fowler. Working for Sue Timney and Graham Fowler, the founders of the company, which grew to develop an internationally respected design portfolio alongside a successful interior furnishings business, his designs were sold to international design companies for fashion and interiors.

Following on from this success Andrew was headhunted to work in Hong Kong for a large Anglo/Indian design-manufacturing company called, Tillsonburg, which supplied the American and UK market. Within this company he established a textile print design/production section and worked as a design manager/fabric sourcer. His work brought him in contact with international buyers as well as manufacturers across Asia.

Andrew also worked for an American company, Rotterdam Ltd, which sourced and designed fabric for Calvin Klein and DKNY.

While in Hong Kong, he worked also with Swire School of Art at Hong Kong Polytechnic as a visiting lecturer and a consultant for curriculum development.

He returned to the UK to set up a freelance design business, Howard Campbell Design. Later he joined with Material Force Design. In this partnership he worked as a designer/art director. He travelled extensively to the States, selling and promoting Textile design.

Andrew worked as a visiting lecturer at Chelsea College of Art & Design and Edinburgh School of Art.

In this present position with the Department of Fashion & Textiles, he aims to maintain his links with industry. Andrew continues to produce work for an agent and occasionally does consultancy work. Andrew provided design production advice to the OPW for the refurbishment/renovation of Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, Dublin, specifically for the reproduction of archival printed textiles.
