The School of Design for Industry

The School of Design for Industry was opened in 1998 and houses the Departments of Visual Communication and Industrial Design and a suite of interconnecting seminar and exhibition rooms.

A variety of design events have been held in the School of Design including the Cumulus Conference – a design education network of premier E.U. design institutions. The Institute of Designers in Ireland’s Design Award judging and a multitude of small exhibitions to facilitate the judging and media promotion of industry sponsored design projects.

The Faculty of Design has the largest number of staff and students and is the most diverse in its activities. All four departments within the Faculty: Fashion & Textiles, Industrial Design, Visual Communication and Ceramics, Glass & Metals, interact with industry through sponsored projects and E.U. funded work placements.

Many high profile Irish and international companies support the departments through mutually negotiated research and design projects, challenging the student creativity and abilities to deal with “live” design issues. Both the departments and students benefit from prize money, equipment and materials and brands.

Opportunities for cross department collaboration within industry sponsored projects are constantly explored with multi-disciplinary student design teams achieving high levels of research, analysis, organisation, communication and design outcomes.

Companies that the Faculty of Design has worked closely with over the last 12 months include Milupa, Benylin, L’Oreal, Niquitin, Magee’s of Donegal, Lectra Systems, Arnotts, National Museum of Ireland, Smurfit, the Special Olympics and Clarks Shoes.

The Faculty welcomes contacts from industry in order to foster future partnership. Contact the Design Faculty Secretary on Tel: 01-6364271.
