Student Feedback

Code of Practice for obtaining student feedback on courses

NCAD is committed to quality assurance and continuous improvement across all units. A critical part of the process for maintaining and reviewing academic standards is to obtain information about student experience. The following code of practice is designed to ensure that ongoing and coherent feedback is obtained by means of consistent methodology but allowing for the customisation of feedback instruments to suit individual area needs.

  1. College recognises the need for autonomy and flexibility within each unit and it is up to each unit to decide on the most appropriate method for obtaining student opinion within the guidelines laid out below.

  2. As part of a unit's commitment to quality improvement it should have mechanisms in place to consult with students about course matters and their student learning experience both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

  3. There are different methods of obtaining student feedback. The most common methods are the use of questionnaires/surveys and student representation on course committees and faculty boards. Student focus groups can also provide analysis of an area.

  4. Units should be able to demonstrate to students that they are committed to the evaluation process, that they take student feedback seriously and that the evaluation process is meaningful to the unit as well as the students.

  5. It is important to 'complete the feedback loop' by informing students of actions resulting from their feedback. Student commitment to the process should be increased by this approach.

  6. Faculties should develop their own code of practice on the evaluation of courses using student feedback. These codes of practice should be informed to students.

  7. Recognising the danger of 'questionnaire fatigue', a variety of feedback processes should be used as appropriate to each unit.
